Bereavement Support

The ATP is sensitive to parents and families in the immediacy of a donation, taking great care to support your needs.   A critical member of our staff is our Clinical Coordinator, who has more than a decade of experience meeting with donor families and providing compassionate bereavement support.  The ATP Clinical Coordinator manages, with the HBTRC, the events surrounding the donation process and becomes the family’s first and primary contact with the ATP.

As part of the process of donation, our Clinical Coordinator will contact the family to schedule a personnel interview with the family, either at a home or in a place and time that is convenient to the family, in order to learn more about the donor.  The counselor will also be requesting access to the donor’s medical records.  This is highly significant, as this information will help link clinical conditions of the donor to scientific analysis resultant of supported research.  Without this information, the donated tissue loses its “context”, diminishing the potential of what can be learned from the donor and the donated tissue.

The ATP wishes to support our families, not only through the donation process, but for the many years that follow.  The ATP staff is available as a source of support for your loss, information for all of your questions with regards to your donation, as well as your interests in research.  We offer multiple ways in which we can stay in contact with you, both publicly and privately.  A strong component of the ATP program is the support we give to our donating families.
